As my journey continues into the realm of studio lighting I am constantly reminded of the similarities with counterpoint and harmony. Multiple light sources give one the ability to create depth and the illusion of three dimensions. The interplay of light and shadow and how it shapes each other echoes that of melody and harmony. Then we have the interplay of gender, sexuality and identity. Luis was keen to explore the representation of his identity and how this is influenced by the free flow of inspiration he gains from the stereotypical gender identities we are conditioned to accept. I found Luis at his strongest and most convincing in the middle of these two gender extremes. There is a B&W photo of him looking quite Dalaesque and I think the surreal landscape of inverted gender stereotypes that Luis explores is suggestive in some ways of the offbeat Surrealist artist. Not to mention the quirky moustache!!
